AMC's Mission Statement
The Appalachian Mountain Club promotes the protection, enjoyment and stewardship of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. We believe that mountains, forests, and waters have intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunities, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. Because successful conservation depends on active engagement with the outdoors, we encourage people to experience, learn about, appreciate, and understand the natural world.

Larry asked for an approval of the slate of leaders for 2015. They were approved and seconded. They were approved and congratulated.
Debbie thanked Larry and echoed his congratulations to the 2015 leadership.
She then provided a synopsis of the 2014 Chapter Accomplishments preceded by her sincere appreciation for the contributions of the current Executive Board and Committee Chairs.
Chapter Chair Report – Debbie commented that is has been an honor to serve as president. She initially responded to a request in 2007 to serve as Treasurer and the time had no idea she would become Vice Chair and the Chair. She said it has been a rewarding experience and thanked the Chapter and club for their encouragement and support. She commented that there are a few positions still open, including vice-chair, family outings sub-chair, archivist, and co-chair for local hikes.
She went on to discuss the recent executive committee meetings where they discussed the importance of leader and volunteer appreciation. Volunteers make up the core of the AMC and the chapter wants to let them know how much their efforts are appreciated. She commented that in the past the chapter has held a volunteer appreciation dinner and is always looking for ideas on how to thank the volunteers.
2014 Chapter Leadership/Member Accomplishments were:
Chris Shafer, Activities Committee Chair is club-wide trails committee chair.
Denis Poyer was awarded the club-wide volunteer leadership award for 2014.
Jim Dowling and Chris Shafer
were awarded the 2014 Warren Hart Award for 224+ hours of
service.
Martha Cruciani was appointed in April to the Warwick
Municipal Land trust.
Our chapter received TAC grands for trail and shelter improvements.
Volunteer leaders provided 250+ recreational and educational activities for 2,600 members.
Chapter Events included: Spring Fling, Fall Festival at Cardigan, Winaukee Weekend, and Annual Meeting and Leader appreciation dinner.
Chapter Volunteers participated in multiple community events including: Arbor Day Tree Plantings, National Trails Day Project, Burlington Trails Projects, RI Families in Nature events, Neutoconkanut Hill conservancy and several scouting events.
Training for Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Step by Step, Leadership and Map & Compass were held.
Chapter trail crews worked on numerous projects and are well-known throughout the State for their expertise in this area.
In closing Debbie thanked the Executive Committee, leaders, volunteers and members for all they do for the AMC and for their support during her tenure on the board.
Tom Eagan was called to give the Treasurer’s Report. Tom stated that that the Chapter is likely to run a small surplus for the year and attributed its financial health to the work and diligence of the individual members.
Awards:
Debbie reported that we are happy to have eleven 25-year members and one 50-year member. She asked the 25-year members to stand. The 25-year members include:
Tom Arrison
Elaine Caldarone
Donald Harris
Cynthia Hiatt
William Keith
Charles Kemp
Hal Litoff
Joan Markert
Kenneth Peloquin
Kim Svehlik
Matthew Vollucci.
Debbie asked Dav Cranmer to come forward and was presented with a 50-year pin. Dav commented that he became a member quite young and that his father was a former chapter chair.
Awards:
Golden Appie – This award is presented to a long-time Chapter leader for their extensive contributions to the Narragansett Chapter over their AMC career. It is a life time achievement award. Linda Pease and Bob Tessitore were asked to come forward to present the award. The award was presented to Jack Shemp. Jack has organized and lead trips for 15 years. Some of the trips include a week long bike trip to the Cape and Islands. He has also lead other biking, hiking and skiing trips over the years. He has lead Major Excursions in Yosemite and the Canadian Rockies. His latest popular trips are the multi-event weekends, first at Squam Lake and now at Lake Winnipesaukee. More people have gone on his trips than any other leader’s trips in our chapter. His example has inspired many new leaders.
John Clark Award – This award is presented to the unsung hero, who goes quietly about their business of contributing to the chapter. This award was started in 1998 after member John Clark.
Chris Shafer was asked to come forward to present this award. The award was presented to to Sid Wax. Sid has instrumental in coordinating and leading the Wednesday evening hikes. These hikes have introduced many members to the joys of outdoors and hiking. He is also a prolific biking leader.
Appie Award – This is the chapter’s highest award. The Appie of the Year Award is presented annually to that person who in an outstanding manner, exemplifies the mission of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
Debbie asked all prior recipients of the Appie Award to please stand. Ed Poyer was asked to come forward to present the award. The award was presented to Scot Disnard. Scott has served the chapter in two capacities. He has served as sub-chair of the Young Members group for four years. During that time, he has led numerous trips for Young Members, he has worked hard to expand the leader group and member participation within that committee, and he has coordinated with other chapters in multi-chapter YM events. Secondly, Scott is a four season leader for Backpacking and Northern Hikes, and has led 16 trips, mostly entire weekends, for that committee since 2012. He has been active in connecting YM members and leaders into the Northern Hikes community and has been helpful in discovering new ‘talent’ for the committee. Scott has attended Mountain Leadership School, and is certified in WFA.
With the business portion of the meeting concluded Debbie asked if there was a Motion to adjourn the meeting.
Motion to adjourn All voting members in favor – motion passed
Bob introduced Suannah Hatch, AMC’s Volunteer Relations Coordinator. Susannah spoke briefly to the group.
Chris Shafter introduced Chuch Horbert who will be giving tonight’s presentation.

2015 Treasurer’s Report
As of September 30, the Chapter has almost $61,000 in cash and investments, this is an increase of approximately $6,000 from the beginning of this year. Please be advised these figures do not include the costs and receipts associated with the annual meeting, which is typically a net cost to the chapter, we will still end the year with more cash/investments then we started. As mentioned last year, a major reason for the increase in our cash/investments related to the difficult decision made by the board in 2013 to eliminate the printed Gazette, which historically cost the chapter about $6k-$7k per year. The money we have saved, has permitted us to spend more on volunteer recognition and appreciation, training and new programs. We have an incredible number of dedicated leaders, and we now that we have the funds to better support their efforts and to say thank you more often, the board’s intention is to do just that.

Membership Committee Report 2015
As
of September 2015 we have 2659 members in the Narragansett chapter.
This number has fluctuated slightly, roughly + or - 100 over the past
year.
The
goal of membership is to encourage members to not only join,
but to become more involved, both in participation and in taking
leadership roles. We need to look at ways to offer more
activities in a timely fashion.
Meetup
groups are having an effect and may push us towards changing some of
our policies.

The Narragansett Chapter Conservation Committee offered a variety of activities with a conservation component. Of the eleven (11) activities, one was a combination, conservation and new member hike at Big River. Two were non AMC activities that were appropriate for families and other members to attend on their own. Ski Committee Report 2014
The Ski Committee ran 4 cross-country ski trips in 2015. Marcie Madsen led a weekend trip to her ski club in North Conway Jan 16-19. Marcie reported that the trip was a success. She said a "couple of lovely gals from New York were enticed to come and they had a ball as did all of the other participants." Ten came with 4 on the waiting list. Linda Pease and Ann Piascik co-led a weekend trip in Alexandria, NH Feb. 6-8. Snow conditions were great. Participants skied and snowshoed the Cardigan reservation trails. On Feb 21, Mark Dennen and Ann Piascik led a beginner day trip to Great Brook Farm Nordic ski center in Carlise, MA. This trip had been originally advertised for Jan 17th with Mark and Chris Schafer. The group of 9 explored the trails until it started to snow heavily late in the day. In March, 10-11 Chris Turgeon and Christine Satterwhite led a day trip to Windblown. Although the conditions were icy the group of 4 had a great time!

Ski Committee Co-Chairs
Biking Committee Report 2015
This year we scheduled just over 30 weekend and mid week rides. Unfortunately due to wet weather several had to be canceled.
The traditional rides, Clam Cake, Pasta Challenge rides, the Block Island ride, remain very popular and many participants comment they look forward to them each year..
Two of our favorite leaders Sid Wax and Nancy Baker led or co-led over 14 rides combined. Their love of cycling and their enthusiasm is to be applauded. Nancy Baker leads her rides through new and scenic areas most people haven’t seen before. She’s an experienced well liked consistent leader. Ted Bell and Carol Richards led and co-led several rides. Steve Harrington, Herrick Spencer, Mike Krabach, Larry & Sue Rollins, and Mark Dennen also led a ride or two. Linda Pease and Bill Rush’s Pasta Challenges offer a break midweek for exercise and dinner!
I commend EVERY bike leader and co-leader for their commitment to our chapter..
I look forward to working with our many bike leaders again and hopefully inspire new leaders for the 2016 riding season.
Marcie Madsen
Biking Committee Chair
Climbing Sub-Committee Report 2015
The Climbing Subcommittee had
another great year! We taught many new climbers and had them climb
with us throughout the year. We had 11 events, 1 social, 3 multi day
training, and 7 trips. We had a few new Lead Climbers start this year
and we hope to encourage more to try next year.
Another goal is
that we may attempt a few inter chapter trips! Since we get many
attendees from other chapters this does make sense. We have done this
a few years ago with the CT Chapter.
Brian Phillips and Peter Barlow
Technical Climbing Co-Chairs
YOUNG MEMBERS REPORT 2015
Young Members events slowed down in 2015, due to lack of leaders.
We mostly shared and supported the other chapters’ events at this time.
Scott Disnard
Young Members Committee Chair
Backpacking & Northern Hikes Report 2015
We’ve enjoyed another excellent and safe year of hiking and backpacking. This year our group sponsored 26 activities run by 25 leaders and co-leaders. Our leaders provided activities ranging from the popular day hikes in the Holyoke range to winter trips above tree line in the White Mountains. Hikes were offered in Massachusetts Vermont and New Hampshire.
In addition to day hikes, we offered hut trips in New Hampshire. We once again enjoyed an overnighter to the Lakes of the Clouds Hut, where we enjoyed the Alpine Flowers and the hearty food.
All of our leaders continue with their Wilderness First Aid / CPR training and some have maintained their Wilderness First Responder certification. Four of our leaders are instructors at AMC’s Mountain Leadership School; one of our leaders instructed the new ‘Advanced’ MLS session. One of our leaders has now served for five years as the School Director.
Some of our leaders offer club-wide events, and one of our leaders led hikes at “August Camp” again this year. Our leaders also serve as resources to the Leadership Development Committee for workshops and trips.
The committee again offered workshops in map & compass and winter mountain safety, which were well attended and very well received.
Our Step by Step hiking series, which trains new hikers to mountain hiking skills and conditions, continued to attract interest, thanks to the commitment of our leaders.
Many thanks to our northern hikes leaders and co-leaders who offered us so many fun, challenging, well run and reasonably priced activities this year.
Ed Poyer,
Backpacking & Northern Hiking Committee Chair
Local Hikes Report 2015
Local hikes has had a good year. The Narragansett Chapter has some wonderful dedicated leaders/hosts but I would like to make sure several are highlighted for their efforts including Maria Earley, Carol Baldwin, Marcie Madsen and Sid Wax. We have also seen a few new leaders/hosts stepping forward including Jean Josephson, Karen Paley and Kim Pepas. Another addition to our leader list just coming on board is Cesar Mitrano. But our sincerest thanks go to all the people who keep the AMC Narragansett calendar full.
Local Hikes Committee Co-Chairs

Leadership Development Committee Report 2015
During 2015 our Committee continued to support the activities committees’ leader development. We worked with other committee chairs and sub-chairs, and are substantially helped by the general membership.
The annual Wilderness First Aid Workshop was held once again in April. This year, we moved to the Kettle Pond Visitor Center in Charlestown. This training was attending by 29 students, of which 10 were chapter leaders. This course was coordinated by Charlie Killam with cheerful help from registrar Linda Pease.
In May, the committee ran the annual Map and Compass Workshop and Field Practice, instructed by Ed Poyer, Bob Janus and Denise Poyer.
Three of our chapter leaders instructed at both the June and August Mountain Leadership Schools. One of our chapter leaders is the School Director.

SEA and Flatwater kayAKING Paddle Report 2015
All sea kayaking and flatwater kayaking is one report because of the blending of both types of paddles on some types of paddles. An example is the Ninigret Pond paddle. Our paddles this year were mostly a repeat of popular paddles done in the past. Two new ones were the Spring Gathering paddle out of Haines Park which had a large group of participants, and the Wood River BBQ pot luck. Several popular paddles were canceled because of weather and in the case of rescue practice, lack of participants. Our annual Winaulkee paddles were very popular and the beautiful weather the Labor Day Weekend was fully appreciated.
